Changing Woman, Goddess of Time

Estanatlehi, also known as Changing Woman, is a Navaho and Apache goddess of time, creation, transformation and immortality. As an old woman she walks toward the east until she sees her younger self coming towards her, then she merges with herself, becoming young again.

Estanatlehi is a pivotal deity embodying the cyclical nature of life, growth, and transformation, progressing through an endless stream of lives, always changing and renewing but never dying.

In both Navajo and Apache traditions, she embodies a dual nature as both a young maiden and an old woman. She symbolizes the perpetual process of all living things to grow and age. But instead of entering a state of death as seen in the natural world, she represents the hope of eternal life and the promise of rejuvenation that the spiritual realm has to offer.

To the Navajo people, she is closely associated with fertility and the changing of the seasons, particularly the arrival of spring when new life emerges.

The Apache Changing Woman is a regenerative and nurturing force associated with the creation of humanity and the transformative cycles of life, death and rebirth.
